I have decided to do a series of tall bearded Irises. The first Iris I posted (Irresistible Iris) is called Giant Rose. The second in the series (Tennessee State Flower) is called Wabash. The current and third in the series is called Patina. Irises are perennials, easy to grow - they attract butterflies and hummingbirds and make lovely cut flowers! There are some 300 species in the genus Iris. The most familiar Irises are the tall (at least 28 inches) bearded Irises. The distinctive flowers have three large outer petals called "falls" and three inner upright petals called "standards." The falls may have beards or crests. Bearded Iris are so-called because they have soft hairs along the center of the falls. In crested Iris, the hairs form a comb or ridge. Most Irises flower in early summer. Some, mostly bearded hybrids, are remontant, flowering again later in the summer. Enjoy!!!!

Lovely photo of the Patina Iris, Laura. I learned something from your narrative, specifically, that Irises have beards and the plural spelling for Iris, which could have a 100 "S's" at the ending. Irisesessseseseses. (sorry, I need an espresso to wake up.) Fantastico!

The first Bearded Iris I ever saw worked in a carnival, Laura.
She was not nearly this pretty.
Amazing depth on this beauty.
