Today, Friday April 24, is Arbor Day!!!! In observance of Arbor Day, I have posted this huge tree which is situated on the grounds of our local community agricultural center. I believe it to be an American Beech. Also, I have included some additional information regarding Arbor Day. Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Today, many countries observe such a holiday. Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by Julius Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. National Arbor Day is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted. Enjoy!!!!! Have a Great Weekend!!!!!

A lovely shot with all the shadows on the huge tree and the nice looking building in the background Laura. Julius Sterling Morton would not have even guessed how after about 140 years later trees will be destroyed all over the world, parts of the Amazon rainforest gone for ever etc.

Have to copy Raj as he mentioned about the decimation of trees world-wide too!

This is a great scene!...the mansion and Beech seem to blend well together!...even the benches there for those who wish to gaze upon this!

Laura, for me Julius Sterling was very ahead of its time. Because of the deforestation of the rain forests for example, the replanting of trees has become a necessity. I hope there is a growing worldwide awareness of the need to replant.
Therefore your post is a very appropriate one.
Very good image and a very interesting narrative too.
Well done my friend!

You nailed the composition, and what a lovely setting this is, lovely imagery. I think they have taken an older home and made use of it for the current time, I love that grand tree. tigs=^..^=

Yep! This is a great day for plantin' a tree! But since I don't have anywhere to plant one, I will symbolize the effort, and plant my self down in the Lazy Boy and watch baseball all day! Works for me! lol. That's a great looking tree and house. The benches look like a good place to carry on a nice friendly conversation with the neighbors. Well done, Laura.

Wonderful shadows created by this grand tree Laura and a timely message for Arbor day. In my area we've recently lost thousands of tree to Emerald Ash borer destruction. But spots are staked out to replant different types of trees near where the old ones were cut down so there is hope.
