The purple martins are back and looking to set up residence at the wildlife refuge - these are nests especially made for the martins as they totally rely on these man made structures - Purple Martins eat bugs like greenhead flies, wasps and beetles and really like living at the refuge!!!! p.s. this condo is one of six - there's plenty of room for every one - I'll post a wide shot shortly.

Laura, purple martins are unknown in my part of the world. So I searched the net for further information and read and have seen that your fine capture confirms the purple martin population is largely dependent on humans to provide nest structures. Consequently, persistence of the population likely requires ongoing human intervention, such as erecting and maintaining nest structures.

Thanks for this, to me, unique photograph!

I've seen these at the Chicago Botanic Garden and in many places in southern Illinois where my late husband came from. Always very interesting and this is a perfect shot Laura.
