This is the first of many photo shoots with food that i will be doing in the next few weeks. Hope you guys enjoy and I hope it doesn't make you tooooooooo hungry!
Just kidding a bit. Although in all seriousness, as I am sure you will come to find out ... photographing food and presenting it as palatable not only for our eyes, but tummies as well ... is indeed a challenge.
The hot knife bit. Only because you said it was a cheesecake, did that thought come to mind. The edges should be smooth. Project that good good 'creaminess' of a good good cheesecake. As presented to us ... looks more pastry-like and flaky.
That aside, like your control over the DOF. And your composition as well. Nice angular line created.
And since this is allll about food and it's presentation ... clean up the back plate some. At first the chocolate crust crumbs were not distracting ... second and third glances ... lil' bit now.
And that is being nit picky.
Tad undecided on cutting off the serving plate on the right. Just took notice of how nice it was and yet, the immediate area above and to the right is nicely blurred and blended with the background. Hence, ergo ... my use of the word 'undecided'.
There is some CA or cyan fringing on the crumbs of the front plate. Took your image here up to the largest resolution as I was curious if there was some digital noise present. Turns out, or I think ... there is some texture to the paper/material(?) used as a tablecloth, for lack of a better term.
Alllll that said ... whaaa? No corner pieces??
:oP
A very admirable post. And in particular, and in reference to your subject matter.
Did you bake this? I think I see what Les means about the smoothness. I know those magazine articles and cookbooks use fake food, so naturally it is perfect. I think you accomplished what you meant to do which was to blur the background and present with this very nice dof. I can't wait to see what other culinary delights you have in store. Coincidentally, I just finished baking a cheesecake before I sat down at the computer. lol Happy Thanksgiving, Emily.
A bit of touch up here and there and you will have a fine ad for any magazine. Maybe try elevating the serving plate just a bit and see what that does for the overall effect. Does look very good and tastey to me, that is over half the battle with any ad.
Like the presentation, but methinks Les is right about the hot knife and the smoothness.
It's a pity that the corner of the plate is cut off, just a tip for the next photo:o) but I like the dof and the compo.
