The side of the hill toward the river was a convenient place to see a _lot_ of left-over structures dotting the area. There is a small structure seen in the middle of the tank, a common scene in most South Indian temple tanks even today; usually they house statue of one of the gods.

I agree JP has shown an interesting historical and archeological site that in my view should be printed out in any guide to travel to India.
