"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
They do have all the fun! As a side note, they wouldn't let me photograph the actual lepers, or they would be posted here. Lepers can be so inconsiderate. <jk> Actually, it was a sad place. Leprosy has been cured, of course, but there are still people living there that had it before it was cured and are disfigured as a result. They are all very old. I didn't see any while I was there. My old driver was incredibly cranky and just bitched the whole time about the government...etc....I did get a photo of that old coot, but no amount of photoshop work could fix that cantankerous mug. Ugh...
They choose to stay there. They have been there all their lives, (it's an all expenses paid government gig, too) so they're comfortable there. It's their home and all their friends are there. A lot of them have kids and family that live in the lower 48. The colony was depressing to me, but to them it is nice. It is kind of frozen in time. It has a really 50s feel to it, and a funky karma. There are some seriously strange vibes coming from that place. Honestly, I would never go back, but if you're in Hawaii, it's just a short plane skip over. Most people go there for one day while they're in Honolulu or Maui, but I chose to stay on the Island for the beautiful Molokai Ranch (not affiliated with Leper Colony) <grin>. If you want incredible privacy/luxury check it out. The Ranch also has some "Eco-Tourism" tentalos that you can rent, if you want to go the "non-luxury" route, or are on a budget. Even the tentalos are better than the other resorts on Molokai. I only went to the leper colony for the famous "Donkey Tour" of the island. The donkey tour was beautiful, but grueling to the butt. Ugh, I've said enough.
Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and He saved them from their distress. He brought them out of their gloom and darkness and broke their chains in pieces. (Psalm 107:13-14)
Odd timing. NPR just did a piece on the last of the Molokai residents a couple of weeks ago. Nice to see an image to go along with the coverage I just heard. Of all the places these people were exiled to this one probably has the most inspirational surroundings. I love the cloud cover reaching down to the rocky shores.
Nice shot! I have been inside this church several times and it was nice to be reminded of some pleasant trips in the past. I do think that your enhancement might have compromised a bit of the detail/sharpness that might be seen in a raw image.
