Rather then playing with the contrast, if you have any sort of Photoshop program, make a tone adjustment. Here you can alter the midtones, highlights and shadows separately. You have a nice sharp image to play with.

New York? I thought there are many buildings there and how do you manage to make a white background? I'm impress. Or are there parts of NY where there's not so much building?

Anyway, good choice for b&w. Agreed with alexis518, you have a nice low-noise image to play with photoshop.
