Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

I'm not sure if I like it also. I do like the patterns. The balance works for me. When I enlarged it I felt the dark, evil and alien. The colors also put me off. I'm not a fan of yellow, amber or brown. I’m also a fan of the benevolent, Close Encounters type aliens myself.
