Juneau, Alaska, USA. While on a photo safari in Juneau, (an incredible experience), we had the good fortune of seeing a pod of humpback whales feeding, in a process called 'Bubbling'. In this photo, the eight or nine whales were beginning to circle around a school of fish, blowing air, flapping their flippers (say that ten time quickly) on the water and making their low groaning sounds to shock the school of fish into a tight ball. Then, they dive and all emerge at the water surface, mouths open, scooping up the fish. Flying above them are many gulls, hoping for a piece of the fish action created by the whales. In this photo, the whales are blowing and preparing for this unified bubbling process. Kindly, the whales did this three times for us, each time getting closer to the boat. (In Alaska, after spotting marine life, It is unlawful to move closer to them; rather, you hope they move closer to you. We were fortunate that the animals moved up the channel toward us.) Enjoy!

Mighty interesting narrative Thad, making very clear what's going on your image. Must be an impressive view to see it in real. You're lucky you could shot this scene, lol.

I imagine that WAS a great experience. All that beautiful scenery from the water, and the whales putting on a show. I envy you, Thad. Fantastic capture, and a great narrative to go along with the shot.

Much like geyser whales I think Thad. :) What a great shot and thanks for the information. I bet that was something to see.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful slice of nature.

That's really interesting. I'm not sure I would have wanted that large of a pod of whales to move closer to any boat I was riding in.
