Skagway, Alaska, USA. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway is a narrow gauge railway built in 1898 due to the Klondike Gold Rush. Those prospectors who traveled by foot followed a very narrow path up the pass into the Yukon Territory. The railway, though a more costly means of travel, followed the mountain pass to the gold fields. Because of the steep mountain slopes and sharp turns around them, the rail width is just 3 feet, instead of the 4.75 feet standard. This railroad track climbs almost 3000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep grades of up to 3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles. After the gold rush ended, the railway continued for mining in the Yukon, but suspended operations in 1982, but resumed in 1988 for tourist travel. The views from the train were quite spectacular, even under cloud cover produced by the high mountains and their ice fields. Enjoy this view toward the Inside Passage.

Very interesting about the railroad and gorgeous scenery - the hairsplitting turns and steep cliffs sound a bit scarey.

You must have a sharp bend ahead if this is shot from the train Thad. I like how you have some of the track included in the shot.
That is some gorgeous view. If someone comes to this site looking for a desktop. They have found one.

Thad, I like to agree with Tick. If you were a passenger/tourist in the train and the train was riding to the left, think the impressive and wonderful view had become even slightly better. Very interesting narrative too. A wonderful post that I enjoy very much! Thanks for sharing, my friend.

Regards, Cornelius.

Tick & Cornelius,,,,I just rode on this train last month and have several shots that include the track. Yes, the bends are that sharp and the hour plus ride from Whitehorse to Skagway was breathtaking. Thad, it's a great shot and better then any that I was able to get.

I have a new favorite in your series Thad. The curve of the tracks is perfect and so is the depth and colors. Well done.

It's just insanely beautiful, Thad. No doubt about it. I learned something about trains from your narrative too.

This is another stunning shot, Thad. Exceptional in every way. The view of the mountains is breathtaking! I would love to take the train, but I bet I would be biting my nails the whole trip!

Like others before you, you found your gold mine in Alaska, Thad. This series beats your southeastern U.S. architectural masterpieces and your Maine rocky shores shots by light years. There's not a single shot that hasn't exemplified what I think of Alaska's majesty.

Showing the train tracks adds mystery and excitement to the shot. What a train trip that would be.

Roger

P.S. Wondrous shot. Just about perfect.

Is that a glacier or lake off in the distance nestled between the mountains? A spectacular view of this beautiful landscape, Thad. A wonderful looking sky hanging over the scene and nice textures in the shot. A good narrative to go with this photo.
