College Fjord, Alaska, USA. The epicenter of the 1964 Alaska Earthquake, one of the largest recorded anywhere, was near this point of land, aproaching the entrance to College Fjord. The moment magnitude was 9.2, unleashing 220-foot high tsunamis, and changed some land elevations up or down by as much as thirty feet in the region. Today, the view is tranquil, with steep mountain slopes rising from the shores of the channel filled with glacial water tinted by the silt. Enjoy!

Such gorgeous water colour, I guess it's due to the glaciers. Beautiful captue and love the shoreline

I remember reading about the 1964 Alaska Earthquake in Life magazine as a small child and got scared by thinking about the earth opening under my feet falling in and closes shut with me inside. Thanks for sharing where it started Thad..the turquoise color of the lake is amazing

Thanks for another Pē (Picture Perfect), Thad. You've provided us meanwhile with a lot of posts of your Alaska trip. Thanks for that too, my friend, not only because the images are precious but, with you narratives, they are very educative as well. Great Job!

Regards, Cornelius.

I like how you captured the grandeur of the scene in this one, especially how steep the mountain is rising from the water.

The turquoise water and the dark green mountain make this a beautiful image, Thad.

I remember thinking like Diane when I was a kid, about earthquakes. Those slopes are gorgeous with the trees, and the water is gorgeous. Hard to believe there was an earthquake there. Excellent shot again, of beautiful Alaska.

In 2005 I went through a 6.5 earthquake. It cost $40K in repairs at the house. The wait for masonry contractors was well over 9 months. I've seen shots and the film footage of the 1964 quake. When I was a renter I rode out the Nothridge quake and actually had a nice time. Of course, I had no idea that a hospital had collapsed. A 9.2 is unfathomable, but I know a few surfers that would have loved to have caught that wave.

The scene is so calming. Hard to believe that this shot is linked with such a massive disaster.

The greens and blues are outstanding Thad. It doesnt look like the earthquake hurt the land any.

Very interesting info Thad - I remember when that quake struck and it's difficult for me to wrap my mind around the magnitude.

Oh my, that would be a steep climb! I would have checked the geological predictions for how often an earthquake comes to this area before embarking on a journey putting me at the very center of the last and one of the most strong earthquakes ever. lol A wonderful view of those mountain sides, Thad.

The quake was a little before my time, so no personal recollections from me. A nice capture of the wooded slopes of the fjord, Thad. Some great looking timber lining the hills. Beautiful colour in the water.

Some people have Gurus, I have my camera. Through the cam lenses I have learnt to deeply perceive life, not only to see, but to look at all expressions of nature, becoming able to read the poetry of the flowers, receiving the embrace of the trees and flying above the clouds without wings! - Susie Sun
