Middlefield, Connecticut, USA. The Ward family burial plot at the Old North Burying Grounds represents multiple generations of the family. Tombstone carving became a form of folk art in the eighteenth century. A well-known stone carver, David Miller, created gravestones seen in this cemetery. Skulls were used to symbolize death, incorporated into a representation of an angel, Miller's having distorted faces. In the 1800s, granite was used in place of brownstone in the creation of gravestones.

The details of the stone texture and even the writing is so focused and crystal clear Thad! These types of photos usually depress me but you've got a perfect comp and excellent shot!

It's all been said, though I'm amazed at the lack of weathering visible on those dark brown stones. Quite intriguing.

Very nice clarity and detail came through in this - especially considering the age of these stones.
