Yorktown, Virginia, USA. The French offered assistance to the American military efforts that were critical to the successful ending of the rebellion against British rule. This was especially true in the Siege of Yorktown. Lord Cornwallis took the town to be a defense of the York River and provide a more southern port for the British fleet. With 17,600 American and French troops, much artillery power, and the French fleet, under de Grasse, blocking British access to the river, a nineteen day siege of the town, including an eight day bombardment using over 15,000 artillery rounds, led to Cornwallis surrendering. This is one of the French cannons on the battleground site.
