Yorktown, Virginia, USA. The pedestal column and Liberty sculpture are shown here, detailing just some of the symbolic elements. Begun in 1871, Liberty was placed atop the pedestal in 1884. Liberty wasn't so lucky, as lightening strikes took her out in 1942. A sculptor, Oskar J.W. Hansen designed a new Liberty, it being completed in 1956. Incorporated in the new design was lightening protection that proved to be insufficient, as in 1990, lightning damaged the hands and torso. Repairs that year included an improved lightening rod system. (There was no sign of lightening on the day we visited. :-))
