Yorktown, Virginia, USA. The pedestal column and Liberty sculpture are shown here, detailing just some of the symbolic elements. Begun in 1871, Liberty was placed atop the pedestal in 1884. Liberty wasn't so lucky, as lightening strikes took her out in 1942. A sculptor, Oskar J.W. Hansen designed a new Liberty, it being completed in 1956. Incorporated in the new design was lightening protection that proved to be insufficient, as in 1990, lightning damaged the hands and torso. Repairs that year included an improved lightening rod system. (There was no sign of lightening on the day we visited. :-))

Long before the white man and long before the wheel, when the dark green forests were too silent to be real. Light foot 1967

Well composed shot showing the details Thad. Hope they have placed a better lightning conductor (invisible) on it now.

Thad, such a monument can't be denied, not for the lighting as well, lol.

Good detailed part of Miss Liberty.

In other words, don't stand there in a thunderstorm.
