Yorktown, Virginia, USA. Yorktown is in the midst of active army and navy bases. On a warm autumn afternoon, we chose a restaurant with a riverside patio for lunchtime. While we ate, two guided-missile destroyers returned from deployment to port for resupplying, docking less than a mile upriver from our location. Preparing to pass under the Coleman Bridge, with its double swing design, this is the USS Winston Churchill, commissioned in 2001. Interestingly, it is the only US naval ship that has a Royal Navy officer permanently assigned to the ship's company. On the stern of the destroyer is a Navy coastal patrol boat, armed with large caliber weapons and staff surveilling the shorelines.

Good shot of the destroyer under way Thad. In the old days I was often in Norfolk and used to admire the naval ships that we passed while entering the port. Crew members from communist countries had to leave the ship outside where the pilot boarded and were brought back on board outside again when we sailed. The idea was that they should not take photos of the naval ships!

Majestic in appearance these naval ships!....My father was a petty officer on several vessels, including an aircraft carrier during WW2...and I guess ships and naval stories have always appealed to me!....

Excellent shot of this while having a meal!!!... ;)

I think that only a few people will realize that such a destroyer has more HP's (horsepowers) than a supertanker or a large container ship.

Magnificent sight to see such a naval vessel come along.

Perfect capture Thad.

Well captured and a splendid display of power - the blues in this are fantastic against the grey tones of the ship.

A great shot of the ship, Thad. Nice clarity and colours in the image. I might have cloned out the bridge structure.
