if you've never seen these in person...they are VERY small...{ they grow about approx 2 inches wide/tall--just my guesstimate}....and are very commonly used here in Florida as "BAIT" by fishermen. If you are lucky enough to find them in areas that there are no fishermen, they are not as shy, and you can watch them in hordes...swarming like a mass exodus. Most places I find them, the crabs are very aware of the dangers of PEOPLE and hide FAST. Yesterday I found a place people do not go..and they were so unbothered by me that they scuttled across my shoes as I was snapping pics of them. This one STOPPED being "afraid"...and did not threaten me with that large pincher claw after a few minutes...so I thank this little guy for the time and posing he did..:)

That guy is great. I once caught an edible crab, but didn't have the heart to cook him, so i let him go. His claws look a little out of proportion with the rest of his body lol.

Good shot

Nice shot Terri - it looks a very colourful little creature. I looked this up for the benfit of Dunstikin Bob :) It seems a bit strange - how do the females feed I wonder. ??
"The common English name “Fiddler Crab” comes from the feeding of the males, where the movement of the small claw from the ground to its mouth resembles the motion of a someone moving a bow across a fiddle (the large claw). "

I saw hundreds of these crabs on the beaches of New York and Long Island as a youngster, but never noticed the color you've brought out in this close up. Nice work Terri.

Ah, he's really beautiful if you can stop and have a look at him. The colors on his back are lovely. Maybe they lose their fear when they sense that you mean them no harm.
A great macro, Terri.
