Hehehe, you said pecker!! Yeah, yeah...wood!! <Bevis & Butthead>
A real grand shot of this feathery fiend...they just luv my cedar siding on the house and it sounds like machine guns going off when they do their business on it. Superb colorings and markings to this little red-headed devil Terri!!

Another bird I am unfamiliar with : ) - what a beautiful mohawk he has. I know its a 'he' becaue the female's is black :) I looked them up as I did not really know why they 'peck' .
Great shot Terri - he is splendid- shame they cause damage.
*You will have noticed that I haven't been commenting as much on your fine images!..This is because of the pains in my hands!..the constant use of the keyboard, makes this difficult..so, my dear friends..I can only apologise to you all in advance!*

Good capture Terri! :-) I always smile when I see woodpecker shots because I know what the photographer went thru to get it! They are normally shy and move around the trunk when you try to snap them. I get dizzy going around and around the trunk with them. We get these birds in the NW also.
Saw the first post ... envied your good fortune in capturing one of these beauties. This IS a better shot and I still envy you me darlin'. What a brilliant red on that head. I wonder if this was the type woodpecker that inspired Walter Lantz's infamous cartoon character Woody ? Nice shot Terri
It looks great to me Terri ... I love to watch woodpecker's as they go to work on my outdoor lightpole. Unfortunately my woodpecker didn't show up this past year ... suppose it moved to another area. A grand shot.
Always remember - Follow the Yellow Brick Road, it will lead you to the Emerald City and OZ A very nice place to repose. Trust me on this one, I live there ............The Lion...................... MY GALLERY - The Magical Mystery Tour

We saw these guys around earlier this year, but they must migrate somewhere else when the cold wind finally starts to blow...they are so pretty and I just love to hear them and watch them as they go about trying to find bugs and whatever else they find to eat underneath the bark. That you were able to capture one just amazes me. The ones we get here are very shy and won't let you get near them at all..did you know that they have a mechanism in their heads to protect their brains from concussions? Maybe they're not so birdbrained as some others..lol...very very nice post.
Hey there Mister Madman, wat'cha know that I don't know
Tell me some crazy stories, let me know who runs this show
Glassy-eyed and laughing, he turns and walks away
Tell me what made you that way
You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being.

Very impressive bird this Terri, as Bob said, we get nothin like this in the UK! I like the fact you didn't zoom right in on him but enabled us to get a 'feel' for his habitat and size. Did you know his cousin, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, once thought to be extinct, has now been rediscovered in Arkansas?
Cheers,
Steve.

I love the Pileated woodpecker and we have 2 pairs up here in Northern Ontario. I have one on my photo gallery, but I took it during a bad snow storm. This has really great clarity and colour, wow. He sure is watching you, lol.
