Though an insatiable glutton and perpetual trickster, Raven is the most prominent character in Northwest Indian tales. A shapechanger and "spirit being," Raven could take any form, though he usually was either in "human" or "bird" form. Considered the creator, he found the first people in a giant clamshell and became their teacher and protector. Raven is often shown with the sun disk in his straight beak, for he placed the stars, moon and sun in the sky. One of the main family crests, Raven tops the Seattle Totem pole.

I wrote a poem while on a roadtrip in Northern Idaho about the Raven that was flying in front of my car...so I thought you might like to see it...
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Flight of the Raven
at dawn
on a long lonely stretch
of road
near a river
called Clearwater
I've waited for the
sun to rise
I want to meet him
watch him fly
see his power
speak we shall not
but he shall soar
above the river
he searches
then we shall sit
in shadows of pines
he becomes
almost unseen
in blackness
as pitch as he is
and the moon looks on
while the river tumbles
and the night time falls
he will leave without a sound
gliding so gently
over the road ahead of me
as tho showing me the way
so I may not lose myself
and he shall be free
to go on his journey
just as I go on mine
his world awaits him
high above my own
the nights coolness
calls me to sleep
as I see him gliding
into the night shadows
disappearing to my eyes
yet I know he is there
..........he is free
Nice manip, Daryl - it suits the mythological significance of the raven, somehow. It's another one that would make a great book illustration.
As well as the Native American mythos the raven features in Celtic and other European myths. For instance, the superstition surrounding the ravens at the Tower of London is an echo of a much earlier folk tale concerning the celtic hero Bran, literally "the Raven", whose head was buried on the site of the tower with the prophecy that he would rise again in the hour of his country's greatest need, provided that the head was not disturbed. However, Arthur removed the head as he was jealous of the status of the mythological hero, and usurped the myth for himself. Those who worry about the ravens leaving the Tower should know that the Raven has already gone, the disaster has already befallen us, and there is no-one to save us now....
Seeing the thumbnail, I thought to myself... Hm... Could it be. *Hovering the mouse marker* Yep, it was Mayne in action again. ;)
I love the placement of the main subject and the manipulation enhances the mood greatly as far as I can judge. (I can't know how much of this mood was in the image before you started mocking about... :P) What is that weird artefact looking grey areas. You must have been using a lot of softening brush, other then that (besides, most probably making it into grayscale, if not shot as such using camera settings...) I have no clue what you did here. You still stand out as mightily handy with your PS. Kudos on that. You keep holding your standards high. (Quite depressing for me actually, since I don't have the time to keep up. :P)
I have no idea how I missed this beauty when it was posted! What a fantastic manipulation and depiction of the raven. The aura surrounding this image gives off a sense of power, of ownership. How I love the Indians :). Many of the things that my Dad has taught me I have personally found to be true and how he loved to tell us stories of nature. That is what he loved the best. This is going into my fav's & will be my 2006 desktop!
Thanks for visiting~decorative pilings~. One can always be amazed at the beauty found when traveling. Surprises seemed to be at every turn and every park on this particular trip. The memories are etched in my mind. I am so glad I was able to share this shot with you. It was taken right after my first ferry ride :~). Now I want to ride that big boat to the big island :~)
Thanks for stopping by. You are welcome anytime!
