Sappi Kraft - Ngodwana (South Africa). One of South Africa's Largest Paper Mills as seen from one of the surrounding mountains. There is only steam, no smoke coming from those "chimneys".The undesirable odour (usually at pulp mills, which are a little different from paper mills) is caused principally by process by-products, specifically the hydrogen sulfide and other reduced sulfur gases resulting from the cooking process. Thankfully, these airborne particles are not harmful to the health of the community in commonly occurring concentrations, but they are considered a nuisance. The Kraft process of reducing wood logs to their fibre constituent is primarily responsible for the odour, as opposed to the sulfite process.

Marietha, your description of this scene is so graphic that I can practically smell the sulpherous air and feel my eyes smarting from the relentless steam. And yet your photo makes a not-unattractive image, especially the way the white steam is concentrated in the upper left corner where people generally keep their icons. An excellent composition. Thanks too for the comprehensive narrative, which I found fascinating, although highly disturbing. It'll make me think more carefully the next time I get out my watercolour paints and reach for a sheet of watercolouring paper.

Ugh, what a blight on the lanscape! Thank God the particules are not harmful, to say the least. I smelled this before, it is really disgusting. Great capture.

Very good shot. Brings back memories, I used to work in one of these (7 years). I was a crane operator in the pulp mill section. I unloaded log trucks from 100 feet up in the air.

This is one sharp foto. The US Government should hire you to go "sleuthing" over here and capture some polution shots. Also, I didn't know polution could be pretty, but it is in your photo. Excellent work.

Thanks for showing the paper factory. You can of luck speak that steam
is the clouds, because as waste products is, is it frequently not this
way well. Thanks for sharing knowledge.
Shining!
