A Gemsbuck (Oryx) at a waterhole in the Etosha National Park - Namibia. Look at those long horns.. i'm glad it's not me who has to wear that everyday of my live.. but it's lovely.... what a majestic animal.. hope you enjoy.... Gemsbok live in herds of about 10-40 animals, which consist of a dominant male, a few non-dominant males, and females. They often live in association with zebras, gazelles, or other antelope. The female's horns may be curved, but the male's are thicker and parallel. Male gemsbok have been known to gore attacking lions with their horns.Gemsbok are mainly desert-dwelling and do not depend on drinking to supply their physiological water needs

What a terrific clear image of this magnificent animal. The horns are indeed extremely impressive. Wicked looking weapons I wouldn't want to tangle with even if I were "King of the Jungle". Great capture and posting Marietha.

Just an old "Grampa" who still has a Kodak "Box" camera kicking around the attic ... learning and enjoying the wonders of modern digital photography.

what a wonderful and handsome animal that is Marietha! but no one male is handsome enough to have 30-40 women in his pack!! sheesh! he has got it made!! lol! good job it does not apply to humans - if I was one of 30-40 women to one man, I would be off like a shot! lol! another amazing photograph to add to your collection - I look forward to seeing more! Patti :)

Now I have the mental image of a gemsbok, and when I am reading Wilbur Smith, who speaks of these beauties often, I'll know exactly what he's describing. I've been watching all of your safari pictures, but haven't had a lot of time to comment lately, but I do appreciate you posting these lovely captures. Your clarity is always good and the compositions, as in this fine shot, are very pleasing and interesting. Nice job :)PJ

A beautiful capture with the reflections and the lone gembok. Did you use a telephoto to capture him or do they let you get this close?
