A Kudu in the Etosha National Park.. What a beauty!! The Greater Kudu is a woodland antelope found throughout East and Southern Africa.Greater Kudu are about a metre to a metre and a half tall at the shoulder and weigh 120 to 500 kilograms, the males being much larger than the females. They have brown to grey-blue coats with many white stripes and markings. There is a crest on the neck and shoulders and a mane along the throat. The males have horns with up to three twists which can reach almost half a metre. They live in woodland and scrub and eat grass and leaves. They are active both at night and during the day. They live in single sex groups of up to ten.

what a magnificent creature Marietha! He has so many features that set him apart from other animals - just look at those horns and that strange shoulder and the stripes - it is like he has parts of lots of animals!! pretty amazing! and they live in single sex groups?? that is a little bit different! guess the stag party is the more fun group! lol! beautiful photograph! Terrific capture Marietha/Susan. I'm so excited to know more about this animal, I just shot some digitals of ours here at the Houston Zoo. They are amazing aren't they and you've presented this one so well. He looks very proud. Thanks for sharing this great post.

"What a Beauty" ??? ... It's poor form Marietha to be commenting on your own posting. The narrative is very thoughtful and very informative ... but I'll do the commenting if you don't mind. Now that I've made protocol here at Caedes clear ... I'll comment...

"What a beauty" :o)

Just an old "Grampa" who still has a Kodak "Box" camera kicking around the attic ... learning and enjoying the wonders of modern digital photography.

He looks very strong and unusual. What awsome horns he has. I just love the softness of the background, the muted colors. I find the landscapes of South Africa haunting and beautiful. Great work, Susan and Marietha. :)

Oh wow so beautiful, the Kudu is also an animal in which a Yemenite Shofar (Jewish Horn used during the feasts of trumpets or Rosh Hashana) I play/blow the "shofar" at the designated times of year as well as give demonstrations. The horns growth are massive in size, I have owned many a horn from these beautiful creatures the largest was 52' around the curve. This is an excellent capture thank you so much for sharing and the first here Ive seen. Great Job.

Love those ears and horns. Is this some of Mom's work again? The animal is familiar to me but not the name. Beautiful capture.

A great shot. Excellent work. The only thing I would have changed is that I would have cropped some off the back to better balance the shot.

Only thing I would have done is, hit the "Auto levels" and "Auto Contrast" buttons in Photoshop.. Give it a try......
