Royal Holloway College, part of the University of London, near Virginia Water in Surrey. This is a cautionary tale. On Saturday I set off to visit Virginia Water to photograph autumn trees. It's about an hour and a half by train plus a 40 minute walk at the other end. The light was fantastic and, as I trudged from the station, I got more and more excited. I arrived at the car park in a sweat and was delighted to see that there were NO cars and NO people. Wow. I had the place to myself. Then I saw the sign. "Virginia Water, and much of Windsor Great Park, is closed due to the current foot and mouth crisis." The cautionary tale: plan your trip and check before you go. The consolation prize: this place was just up the hill and the light was amazing. The sun was lighting up the facade and was just about to be overtaken by those menacing clouds.

The lighting is great! I like the lush green carpet of grass and that sky is, indeed, menancing. The shadows extend the length of the diagonals. The clarity and sharpness is extraordinary. Another very good view to us Yankees of your historical buildings in this beautiful country.

Nigel, this image is fantastic. The light is extraordinary in the way that it is so bright on the building but with those dark, menacing clouds behind. I hope you didn't get wet on your trudge back to the station. The building is Victorian Architecture writ large and with knobs on! Also, I love that tree and its shadow.

Wow. Stunning shot. I bet they don't let anyone walk on the grass. The sky and the lighting are fantastic. I think I will put your shots of London in a special folder.

This is so impressive! The dramatic skies really bring the facade of this building to life. The architecture is amazing and your comp on this is perfect. A wonderful "consolation" shot, Nigel.

Even the best laid plans sometimes go awry! Too bad you missed your autumn colors, but this place is fantastic and you have composed this to show it off to the utmost. I love the lighting on it, too.

Whatever you do, don't give my cows that "hoof and mouth" thing. They won't be able to vote. This will get a 10 if they don't come down with something. Building really shines against the sky and the chimneys are to die for. I too like the tree with the shadow. Not a wasted trip at all. Excellent Nigel.

awww! how disappointing to have gone all that way and then not be able to photograph the parkland!!! they could at least have notified you! ...and yes you need to plan ahead Nigel, but I doubt anyone would expect a park to be closed!! Glad you found something worth photographing! I can see the light is good. Saturday was miserable here! soooo at least you had the sun on your face! :)

You certainly have been catching the light lately, Nigel..between this one and the last post, I'm beginning to think you share the Midas Touch with Sabine!!

A worthy consolation for the aborted trip to Virginia Water, Nigel. The lighting in this shot is fantastic and that array of chimney stacks draws the eye again and again. Great work!

Nigel, must comment on another masterpiece before you delete it! I know this place well, passed it every week when I worked up that way, and like you too want to see more of Virginia Water, and so many photo opportunities round that way, Windsor Great Park, Sunningdale....the list goes on.

As for the picture, just love that light captured before those menacing clouds make their mark, and that tree and its shadow giving it that touch of perspective.
