Hollyhocks are popular garden ornamental plants, cultivars selected, particularly from A. rosea. The flowers have been selected for variations in colour, with dark purple, red and white-flowered plants available in addition to the colours found in wild plants. Hollyhocks are very drought resistant, and do well in full sun locations that might be too hot or dry for other plants. They produce large, flat coin-shaped seeds (1/2" diameter) that seem to grow easily wherever they drop. While an individual plant might only live a handful of years, by that time chances are good it will leave plenty of descendants. They have very long taproots which make transplanting difficult. Fabulous shot, Nathan! Are you using the 18-55mm lens? The lighting is just so fine. I love these because they remind me of the ones that grew outside my grandma's house when I was little. I liked collecting and opening up their seed pods. I think I'll just keep this image, seed pods and all! :0)

Wow Nathan, what a wonderful trip back into time this is for me. I still see Hollyhocks and reminisce as we are driving or walking along. My grandmother had them as did my Mom...they were always outside a window and they grew tall and the bees loved them and so did I!

The color here is rich and deep. The yellow in the center stands out nicely using the blossom color as a background.

Great color, clarity, spot on composition and high quality in this image!

Thank you so much for sharing these delightful flowers with me and for the wonderful memories that came flooding back.

Already on my desktop and to my harddrive and favorites this image goes to bloom for a long time! :=)

KEEP-PAH! The capture of the texture in these blooms is excellent. I like the "paper meche" look. Great detail. One thing I always do when posting flowers is clone out any defects.

The shadows are lovely. They make the photo, for me. This shot is unlike most flower shots.
