Bumpass Hell is located in Lassen National Park in northern California. Lassen Peak is the southernmost volcanic peak in the Cascades and errupted in 1914-1917. I visited this strange "otherworld" geothermal sulphur pit last summer. I was impressed with the strange colors, but not the odors. Legend has it a man named "Mr. Bumpass" fell into one of the pits and consequently lost his leg due to severe burns. I didn't want to test this legend myself.

Shannon - What first attracted me to this photo, was the range of colors. I had to see a larger version and was not dissapointed. I am awed by the frustrative landscape, and the color vapor comming from the pit. I can just about imagine the smell of sulphur in the air. You can actually see some of it in the yellow rocks. For hiking to the location you get a 5 for bringing your camera to take this great photo you get 6. The photo, now that gets high marks. Good job. Do More Please.

Hi Shannon, nice to meat you! I, like Jerry, am enjoying the soft beautiful range of colors!! Beyond that, the gorgeous variety of textures is very appealing also!! Fumes of sulphur, well, that is another story, but I think the image is well done, and all the elements blend to produce a fine photo, high marks from me also! Sincerely, Marilyn

Nice image, I agree with your opinion of not wanting to find out about the legend, it looks like a very intimidating location.

There is a reason they put an "off" button on these things, you know...

a mysterious looking place indeed.. and i shall follow suit in saying the warm colors really do give an air of intrigue to this photo.. tho i know the smell was less than pleasant, the sight had to have been breathtaking (no pun intended).. its amazing how many places on this planet can seem so alien.. great capture..

I live in the shadow of Mt Lassen and have enjoyed this smelly spot. You did a good job of capturing the mystery and color of these sulfer pots.

Strange landscape! Is that fog or steam? Interesting place to visit but if it smells like sulfer, it must be hard to stay there for very long, Good capture.

My visits will be infrequent this fall but my friends here at Caededs will not be far from my thoughts. Carrie
