Beneath Istanbul lie hundreds of gloomy Byzantine cisterns. They're left from the days when Istanbul was Constantinople. The grandest of all is Yerebatan Saray Sarniçi, called the Basilica (or Sunken Palace) Cistern because of its size (70 x 140 meters, or 2.4 acres), its capacity (80,000 cubic meters—over 21 million US gallons) and its 336 marble columns. Remember the scene in the old James Bond movie From Russia With Love when Bond is rowing in a small boat through a forest of marble columns? That scene was filmed in Yerebatan. Walkways and atmospheric lighting were installed during the 1990s so you can see all its curious corners.

This is getting strange Antonio. Yesterday I commented on your picture of a bridge in Prague that I've been across... Today you're showing us this place in Istanbul that I've been to!!! Istanbul has to be one of my all-time favourite cities, I really loved that place. I took pictures here too, but with my old camera and they weren't too great. It's very difficult to photograph, you did very well here.

Wonderful, Antonio. It isn't easy taking images here and as proof of that, I took many while there, but none of them even come close to this wonderful shot that you took. The ISO must have been turned up for this and the color cast is just wonderful. Very well done.

Magnificent. I saw some of these cisterns on a discovery or history channel program. The camera work was good but not dramatic or inspiring. This is more like the shot I was picturing.
