New York has the Statue of Liberty, Paris has the Eiffel Tower and Brussels has the ...... Manneken Pis. This statue of a little boy in a somewhat compromising position has since several centuries been a major tourist attraction in the city. When most people see the 'manneken', the first reaction is always one of amazement: "Look, how small he is ! Why does everybody want to see him ?" The people of Brussels, however, accept him the way he is. After all, it doesn't always have to be big to be beautiful. Nobody actually knows why the manneken is there. Many legends about it. I prefer this one: A man had lost his little son. He found the child after two days near the place where now the fountain of manneken-pis can be seen. When the father spotted his child, the latter was peeing. As a token of gratitude the father had the fountain with a statue of a peeing boy constructed.

I think I have seen this statue before. It is a puzzlement to not know the origins of such a statue, but to accept it as is. Thanks for the proffered story, Antonio. It seems to fit.

Great shot of this very popular Belgian icon Antonio! You're quite right about various versions re the origin. Here's my favorite: During a war between Belgians and some invader troops in the 16th or 17th century, a Belgian soldier, the very young son of a Belgian army general/aristocrat, was spotted peeing by a tree in the heat of the battle! This was taken as a sign of cool-headedness and courage of this boy, so indifferent and fearless about the enemy men, to take a piss in the middle of the battle! So they erected this monument in remembrance of the event, and as a sign of the bravery of the Belgians in battle.
