MIR. Mir is Falmouth's most regular visitor. She took part many of the Tall Ships Races, such as the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races hosted by Falmouth in 1998, and was a visitor to Falmouth in June 2004, June 2005 and June 2006. Mir, which means 'peace', is the third ship of a series of six ships which were built in the 1980's at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk, Poland. She was designed as a training ship intended for training cadets and taking part in tall ships' races. Mir's was a new type of design for square rigged training vessels. The first ship of this design was called Dar Mlodziezy, which was built to replace the old sail training ship Dar Pormoza for the Polish merchant navy. Russia then decided that she wanted a similar design for five ships as part of a trading deal with Poland. First came Druzhba and then in 1987 Mir for which the rigging design was slightly altered so that she could sail closer to the wind - up to 30 degrees rather than the usual 60 degrees for square riggers Picture taken today at my city - Aveiro
