FIESA 2011 - 9th International Sand Sculpture Festival FIESA is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures since 2003 in Pêra, Algarve, that in each new edition is dedicated to a different theme. The festival is unique in the Iberian Peninsula and is considered the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, by the size of its sculptures and the area they occupy. Every year, a group of talented sculptors, from various parts of the world and experts in the art of sand sculpting, join to give shape to thirty-five thousand tons of sand, in an area of fifteen thousand square meters. This year's theme is Animal Kingdom where animals are represented in a humorous manner, personified in human behavior and honoring characters from children's and adult fiction. Concern about the environment and the preservation of species is also reflected in this year theme, with scenes of animals in danger of extinction, represented in their natural habitat. I never lose this festival!

So fantastic! I love these images of the sand competition you post every year. I have a lot of questions about how long they have to sculpt these, is there no fear of bad weather ruining them and how do they come down or are they left to the elements? In fact, I think I will google it, Antonio. Thanks for this awesome image.
