A Voyager 1 capture from 1979 - this image was heavily degraded so I have done quite a major repair job on it to try and make it half decent. The Great Red Spot is an anti-cyclonic (high- pressure) storm on Jupiter that can be likened to the worst hurricanes on Earth. An ancient storm, it is so large that three Earths could fit inside it.

The 'painted' look is due equally to the natural cloud effects in the storms on Jupiter and partly down to the restoration work i did which consisted of a single pass of colour noise and jpeg artefact removal. Finally I duped the layer and (very painstakingly) re painted all the clouds using Photoshop’s smear tool before ghosting 50% of that correction back onto the original. It’s the same method I demonstrated in my fashion flesh tutorial.

Here is the original NASA version if you want to compare the before and after.

Very nicely done. Excellent edit as usual. It makes for a great desktop, and you know my thoughts about space images ;)

I like this one, it really shows the angry turbulence close up.

I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.

Not a very nice "spot" for a holiday; but a very nice desktop undeniably. Thanks for your efforts.

Excellent cleanup, Phil. For those who would like to get an idea of just how much work was involved, here's the original .

Ask your Congressmen and Senators why our existing wells aren't pumping more than 3 days a month? There a lot of unused capacity in existing wells.
