This image was taken by the High-Resolution Stereo Camera onboard ESA’s Mars Express passing over the region also known as the ‘Labyrinth of the Night’. The perspective view has been calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the stereo channels.

Pierre – it is a special camera on the ESA satellite that takes a series of images with different properties at the same instance including colour, greyscale depth of field shots etc all of which go into some super geeky software to process these perspective shots which are as you say – very striking indeed.
