A close up shot of the launch that shows the scale of the new rocket better - for example, the superstructure on the launch pad is normally taller than the shuttle whereas the Ares is clearly much taller - almost twice the height of the shuttle at launch in fact.

Nice shot...Are they going to go back to the old type gantries too, like they used with the Saturn V...to accomodate the height difference?

not sure - the Ares 1 is the smallest of the planned Ares rockets. the cargo ship - the Ares 5 will be the biggest and most powerful rocket built yet - more so than the Saturn 5's but it will most likely launch in the same fashion as the similarly configured Ariane 5 ECA rocket the European Space Agency uses.

That is unless the presidents 'advisors' get their way and scrap the Ares project in favour of developing space taxis with the private sector and possibly a manned mission to an asteroid - WTF?

Asteroids (?) What happened to all this talk just a couple years back about a manned mission to Mars? They change all the time...

The Ares/Constellation program is to return to the moon to use that as a staging post for going onto Mars. The Ares 5 was designed to be able to deliver 70 tonnes of equipment into a Martian orbit.
