i would like comments on blue heron on laie. to myself it looks like the land and sky are filled with water. the sky itself looks blue. the blue heron looks blackened of course because it is backlighted. i call this my california shot because it looks like blue slate smog. any comments, collectively or alone will make me glad.

The colour is indeed fantastic and the misty air makes the image wonderfully moody. The only thing I would do to maybe improve it is tilt the pic so the horizon is level. It is nonetheless a wonderful capture though, well done.

Mike, make sure your subject is behind one of the focus points. do you have 7 or 9? Also, what mode were you shooting in? The creative modes will allow you hold the shutter button half way down to focus on something and then move the camera to change your composition and then press it the rest of the way down to release the shutter. I'm not sure if you can do that in the automatic modes. A mono or tripod might help with the tilt too.

Hey Mike I agree with Rob 100%. Most of your pics are running out of focus and this one is tilted pretty bad too. Check and see if you are on auto focus and use a tripod every chance you get. When doing animals you have to get the best setups you can, not like landscape where everything remains fixed and gives you time to do good setups on the fly. And remember us old guys are not the steadiest cats in the forest so shooting hand held is hit and miss. I shoot handheld a lot but I still use a collapsed monopod as a brace, that works pretty well when you can't use a tripod. Do some test stuff around the house and dial in that focus problem. You have some good stuff going just refine it now.
