I took this last night from my church parking lot. Yes, it's an unusual gallery, but that's only because the mountains are in the background and it's too dark to see them. Thanks for your comments, bad, good, or otherwise - they all help me improve. Steve

It's neat that you left the lighted grass in it, then there's a tree silhouette, but even the tree is lit a bit, and a black sky. The way light and dark play in this is just really cool. I like it!

it's a pretty nice picture. the one thing i would maybe do different is try and get the moon out by itself. i like having the tree there, it adds a nice touch, but perhaps move yourself to the right so the tree takes up the left half and the moon by itself on the right. just an idea...

also, what was your shutter speed? :o)

Okay Steve, I was going to slack on the critiques but I'm going to let you have it. 1. Why did you use a flash? It certainly won't reach the moon. 2. Why did you opt to shoot through the branches rather than step to the right for a clear shot. Everyone thinks because it's dark you have to use a flash. But you can't light up the moon so why try? I am going to upload a pic later of a moon shot with no flash and I will post the settings I used as I usually do. Then when you get that Pentax you can nail a shot. Get a tripod too if you don't have one.

guess what Steve! I have an almost identical photo to this taken last Saturday but it is a mirror image! The moon is behind the branches too which I like because it adds something extra to the picture and I used a flash too because I was trying to capture the fence and branches as well and it worked fine! sooooo.....it may not be brilliant but it is good and it is how you wanted to take it! :) and although the moon is beautiful, I think on it's own it needs to fill most of the picture to be very interesting! ok I am babbling, but you get the gist! ;) Patti

Moon shots are more difficult than you would think. From looking at this, I would geuss that you wanted to silhouette the tree against the moon? First of all, don't use a flash. The juniper bush in front is overexposed along the stem and now your tree is no longer silhouetted, but illuminated. It's very hard to see the sky conditions from this photo so I'm not sure if the moon had clouds over it or if it's just totally overexposed as all cameras will do, so I'm guessing it's clear and the moon is overexposed. All cameras will try to judge how to expose a photo based on the overall light within the photo. Because night shots are dark, that's what the camera will meter for, nevermind the blindingly bright moon in the photo, so the moon will always come out overexposed. You need to use some manual intervention and adjust the settings yourself. I don't know what sort of camera you have or if it's possible, but the settings need to be set for what would otherwise be a low light setting durring the day. I believe I had one that was 1/60sec at f10 or something like that. I'm interested to see what Jerry posts (digicamman) A tripod would always be recommended as anything less than 1/30sec (depending on your lens), you will need to start to worry about camera shake. Happy shooting.

This capture is plain pretty :) I like the angle of this photo with the trees and grasses to the side. The moon is lovely shining through the trees branches. The grasses are fine looking with the light on them - makes a nice contrast between the tree and grasses. Thanks Steve, for this moonshine :))

I need to catch up on things so can't comment too much. But I love all of your fine images. I might be lurking in the background :)
