You are right Mich, Roger. Elephants mean a lot in our culture, though they are not God. In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha has elephant face so all the elephants are treated with high respect. If you observe the image very carefully you can see the idol of Ganesha near the right Window. If you browse my gallery, you will find a image named, 'Nandi and Ganapathy" with more description about Lord Ganesha. Ganapathy is popularly worshipped as a remover of obstacles, so the idol is rightfully placed near the front of the temple to ward off any evils. More on this please visit: Lord Ganesha
Also Elephants are such gentle gaints so they are placed in front of the temple as if they are guarding the temple. In olden days when there used to be processions of Gods they used place the idols on top of the Elephant. It is still done in Mysore Dasara
