For all of you who saw my previous images of lush tea estates in “Tea glory 1 & 2”, this is the dark side of the same plantations. Huge and long grown trees are cleared out to make room for tea plantation in Sri Lanka. Please view full and you will see what I saw and you will feel what I felt.

This is so sad Priyantha. All of these trees are cut down and the land is cleared away so that tea plantations can be built? From what you have told me, these plantations are quite large and fully self-supporting with their own store's, schools, doctor's, hospital's, etc. That means that a whole lot of trees are sacrificed so the laborers can work for just a few pennies a day. Do I have this scenario right? This image is the perfect duality for the beauty that you showed us of the tea plantations with all the tea leaves plump and green. It is quite dark and drab and rather lifeless looking. Thank you for taking the time to present this so that all may see what really happens. Excellent piece of work my friend. Thank you for sharing it also :~)

A most striking image. The monochrome color works great to give out the feeling you intended, plus the fog in the foreground adds a lot to the mood of the image. Thanks for showing us the dark side, we should all be aware of it and know that everything comes with a cost.

Oh my....yes it is sad to see the trees cut and laying there like that. I am hoping that it develops into something good by filling the whole area with teas. And that the teas will bring life to people for their work by giving them an income after harvesting. Please tell us a bit more about how all this work, my friend. Your photos touch my heart so deeply and I would like to see more of them....I appreciate very much what you write also..Verena

Excellent photo! The colours and message behind it have a real sense of destruction, and unease. The photo is well composed, and pretty unique to other photos i see on this site.

Deforrestation is not a pretty sight where ever you go in this world today!...it is more like images this that has to make governments 'sit-up' and take notice of what is happening..and to realize that it is destroying our heritage......well done for the post son........

It's really saddening that the environment is cut down, and the picture does convey the message well. A very touching shot!

Very disturbing Priyantha, such beautiful land being slashed and crushed. You have done well taking this shot and B&W is the perfect for it, very well framed also. Excellent work and high marks for the shot and the message!

The tone helps reinforce the subject matter as do the two people walking on the road. We have a similar problem here in the States with "land development" and urban sprawl. Large tracts of land are cleared out for high density neighborhoods. Great photo.
