I'll assume that the sun doesn't actually change shapes; so my best guess is that this is caused by atmospheric distortion although I know there are some physicists out there who can provide a better explanation.

You're right, Dorothy. A well known phenomenon caused by heating the air by a setting sun above a sea surface that has a relative high air humidity (By checking-out the above link, I've only an explanation in the Dutch language available).

I like the soft sky and the textured water , the colors are terrific too. I don`t understand the white area just above the sun , unusual because it should have some color it would seem. Never had it happen but have had odd things happen. Nice photo .

Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.
The sun disturtion is cause by the heat, it's very notiable, on hot roads, beautiful sunset capture
