Balcony door in Auxerre, France, September 2009. I fell in love with the simple charm of these 'french' doors. The beautiful blue railing, the trailing ivy, and the old-world lamp didn't hurt either! This is my entry in the current Doors Contest.

There's a good balance in your picture here, I like how you captured this scene with the plants, the beauty of the colors and the street lamp.

But......

Think it needs some cropping under the balcony to get rid of the window and some cloning of the roof window at the top....in my humble opinion of course....

Overall a good shot, good clarity and lighting:o)

Good luck in the contest.

It is a very unusual angle you selected for your capture. However, the picture overall is very very nice. I love the french door. I like the plants coming down from the roof. I love the street lamp. The colors are also very beautiful.

Perhaps you shouldn't have left all those subjects in one photo ... :)

it's great in its all..

I agreed with both the above critiques at first glance and proceeded with a rework, both cropping and cloning, and what had been a delightful image was suddenly barren and with little interest, which really surprised me.
I left the skylight cloned over but restored all the rest, and corrected the perspective enough that the doors appeared straight.
And though it tends to defy compositional conventions, it's one of those rare shots that is delightful regardless of those conventions.

I tend to agree with snapshooter, that it's delighful regardless of conventions. I think it is possible to rework something far too much. And there has to be something that caught the photographer's eye in spite of --- or even BECAUSE of-- the so-called flaws. I think those little imperfections have made this shot far more interesting that if it was "perfect", right down to that little blue bucket on the balcony. This shot has some wonderful points to it, and we shouldn't be so willing to pick out what we percieve as flaws.

I love the idea and the door, but there is so much prettiness around it that that might actually take away from the door posting. I adore the entire photo. Will for sure save it.Verena

Q: Why did the blonde get so excited after she finished her jigsaw puzzle in only 6 months? A: Because on the box it said From 2-4 years. Q: How do you confuse a blonde? A: Ask her to alphabetize a bag of M&Ms. Q: Why are dumb blonde jokes so short? A: So brunettes can remember them.

Guess I like everything about this photo. I know you could have cropped some, but it might taken away from the lovely ivy hanging down. Terrific photo in my opinion.

A terrific shot and I would have only cloned out the skylight and the blue sign in the front, otherwise a splendid photo!!
