My dear friend Tick posted this marvelous image of Firefighters hard at work battling a blaze. This, to me, is the flip side of the coin. This morning a contractor struck a 3 inch gas main on the East side of Milwaukee. The leak forced the closing of a grocery store, several other businesses, the evacuation of more than 500 people and the closing of 2 major roads, including a bridge over the Milwaukee river, forcing people to go miles out of there way to get to another bridge. Along with the Utility Company Milwaukee Police were called to re-route traffic and 4 Companies of the Milwaukee Fire Department were on the scene in case of an explosion. With the area sealed off and the Gas Company working to shut off the flow the risk was minimal - but the firefighters still had to wait - just in case. The temperature was already 84F, but they waited, stoically, in full gear, with hoses at the ready. While everyone else was being moved away, they were moving in - just in case. In the meantime, nothing to do but wait. Comments and critiques always welcome!

This is an interesting moment you captured. The elements you chose to include tell us a story very clearly. The water hoses scattered around, the building in the background, and the exhausted fire fighter suggest the activity that's been going on here.

I think I'd like it even more if the firefighter had been at left looking right, to give me a feeling of anticipation of what he's seeing. Overall a good shot - well exposed and focused.

Rich, a wonderful capture of a brave American. Not only suffering the heat, but probably in harms way should the gas leak become an explosion. You just cannot thank them enough.

Great shot GBR and thanks for the trip back on my post. It is amazing what one screwup can cause. Lives, loss of time and money. Pays to be careful. I like how you caught him still waiting in the heat. They are true heroes.

A wonderful capture & story Rich. The detail is amazing & then the image speaks for itself ... the brave firefighter waiting patiently / calmly in case the circumstances of the event would change drastically. It's amazing how the various city departments come together during a distaster ... to keep everyone safe. Like John said ... we can't thank them enough. Great post Rich & so well done.

Two sides of one coin... sometimes it's feast or famine, too much to do or hurry up and wait... A great image of the other side of a fireman's work...

Very good photo, says a lot. Unfortunately here in California I don't think they have a moment to rest, with over 1100 fires burning up our State. They really are our modern day hero's.
