WARNING: Some will find this narrative deeply disturbing. My friends on the PD are gonna be mad at me because I broke my promise to them. This shot was taken in the middle of the 'war zone', probably the 2nd worst area of the City. It resembles the Wild West, with shootings, robberies, and othe violent crimes so commen they many times they don't even make the news. Unemployment runs near 80%, 90% of the neighborhood lives below the poverty level. Owner occupied homes are extremely rare and many of the houses are boarded up and condemned. In the midst of it all strolls this young lady, with her fashionable outfit and vibrant colors. She was a very attractive lady, I'm guessing in her early twenties. A sign of hope you might think. Guess again my friends. Her head is turned because she is watching traffic...she is working North Av. in the middle of the afternoon as a prostitute. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I would wager a few months worth of house payments that she is using crack cocaine which runs rampant in the neighborhood. According to my friends on the Police Department, these streetwalkers are the bottom of the barrel. Those that can afford a computer use Craigslist to advertise their services. Don't believe me? Check for yourself. Open Craigslist for yourself, open 'erotic' under services and see how many ladies are offering themselves for sale. Oh, they use cute phrases like 150 kisses or 150 roses for a half hour of 'service', but it is quite obvious what is oing on. Those that don't have computers, but do have phones use datelines. I won't name them, because I don't want to get sued, but you see their ads on late night TV. I called one on a free trial the other evening and their were 42 local women on line. 34 of them were looking to 'hook up' with 'generous' men. In less than 30 minutes I had 15 different women offer me a variey of sexual acts at prices ranging from $50 to $200. Those that can't afford either work the streets. Again according to my friends on the PD, the going price on the street for oral sex is $25, intercourse is $50. TThis young lady may get a bit more because she (for the moment) is young and attractive...but not much more. Anyone arrested for prostitution in Milwaukee is tested for veneral diseases. Almost 1/3 have tested positive for AIDS; 2/3 have gonorrhea or another sexually transmitted disease. Many have gonorrhea of the throat. Think about that one for a minute. The youngest prostitute my friends can remember being picked up was 14; the oldest 52. The average man picked up for soliciting a prostitute is married, with 2 kids, in his forties and lives in the suburbs, making over $40,000 per year. Yet some people will continue to insist that prostitution is a victimless crime. Would you feel that way if this was YOUR very attractive daughter offering her body to middle aged men for $25...or perhaps your mother, or your sister or your aunt? Is it victimless when a man brings a venereal disease, or even worse AIDS, home to his wife? Is it victimless when this young lady takes the miniscule amount of money she makes and buys crack from a dealer who terrorizes the neighborhood with his gangs and his guns? Is this young lady not a victim herself of the men who prey on her addiction for their own release? I suspect that if I came back in 6 months and tried to find her she would be unrecognizable. She will have a one in three chance of having AIDS and 2 in 3 chance of having a veneral disease. The Crack will strip the meat from her body leaving her thin and frail. The nice clothes will either be sold at a second hand shop or ruined. Her beautiful smile (and she did have one for me when I drove past, attempting to lure me in) will be gone, the teeth probably rotting in her mouth by then. The long hair will either be cut short because it is to much work, or will be an oily tangled mess. The average span for a prostitute on the Savage Streets in Milwaukee is about 18 months. After that they are either moved to larger cities where they can charge more, in treatment (which is rare), in prison because as business slows down as their appearance degenerates they turn to other types of crime...or dead. Wanna talk to me now about victimless crime?

It is a sad story for sure, but this is a desktop site, and i won't see anyone set this image as their desktop image.

I can understand writing this, and posting the photo, but I don't quite understand the purpose of posting on a wallpaper sight. I'm surprised the MODS allowed this write up etc. I could well see your posting this on a separate website or a blog or in some other means of telling about this. But here just doesn't fit too well in my opionion. It's a disgusting revolting unbalanced world, that's for sure. V

Thanks Rich! I have to admit, I didn't see the savage till I read your post. My personal opinion is that stories like this need to be told. Here, I don't know. These are the societal and personal problems we have to face or nothing changes. I used to wonder what I could do. Do something for someone else without expectation of reward. I volunteer and there are alot of those jobs around. People love free labor. If I can't find time for that, I am probably selfishly satisfying my own desires. Which I do, but it's progress not perfection. Acting "as if" works too. I've had to do that. Funny thing was, I didn't start feeling better till I did things for somebody else. Great Post! Thanks! A harsh narrative telling an all too familiar story ... one it's so easy to turn a blind eye to because it seemingly doesn't directly effect us. How sad ....and how easily it could be us... there but for the grace of God.

It's a sad sad world.. unfortunately this happens everywhere..

The story definately makes the image come alive and hopefully make people realise just how lucky they are to have what they have in life.. Good work Rich.. just be careful out there..

Yes Verena it's not a desktop wallpaper but then again someone might want it on there to remind them of the life outside their square (all have different tastes) and there a LOT of images on here that are not wallpaper criteria so singling out one image can actually cause a domino effect on all the other images that are NOT also.. right now I could name quite a few new images that I personally wouldn't have on a desktop and wonder why anyone would use them as wallpaper.

Ah yes, the world's oldest profession as they say, and another common sight in most if not all cities...yep, there's plenty of victims to go around when it comes to this sort of thing...I agree Verena, it may not be desktop wallpaper but also agree with J that there's many others on the site that also are not...perhaps we need a journalistic gallery of some sort.

You are right Jacqueline. The viewer has the choice to read or not read, to use as a desktop or not. It is this freedom of choice that makes this series so captivating. I for one applaud you efforts GBRx3. Where there are people gathered, the gospel needs to be told. Think about it. I did.
