Rob, these were dire circumstances in these harsh times. But the parents of these children may have had no choice.
Today, this form of 'slavery' is almost impossible to imagine in the modern world. But reality forces me to say that there are still children who are being exploited, but in a different way.
Your perfect way of coloring has once again enhanced the dramatic effect of the original B&W photograph.
