I'm pretty sure now that this isn't a bumblebee, but a female Xylocopa varipuncta or carpenter bee. While the black females can sting, they are supposedly quite docile. The tan colored males have green eyes and can't sting at all, but they are protective of their territory. They're also very fast and devilishly hard to shoot.

That sure is a BIG one. Will you just look at them paws... don't even wanne think about the sting.
