Because of their speed, bumblebees are much harder to shoot than honeybees. They fly faster and stay on the flowers less time, generally about 1-3 seconds. This one dawdled a bit and I got lucky. I believe the species is Bombus melanopygus.

Quite a shot, Russ. Good thing they aren't really that big, or they'd have stingers the size of an ice pick.

That's a very pretty one... I like the colours. The bee is maybe a little dark against that background, but it's a stunning shot.

Dark backgrounds are common in macro shots, especially strobe-lit ones like this. I also couldn't have gotten this shot without the very speedy autofocus the lens has. Autofocus in macrophotography was just about useless until this lens came along. Combine that with the stabilized optics, a good strobe and the resulting clarity can be stunning. This is the lens you put on your camera and never take off.
