The glass is a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens (the 2nd gen, stabilized version). Fill light was from a Canon MR-14EX ring flash and the shot was taken from about a foot away. It wouldn't allow me to approach from the front though, but luckily returned to the same bush when I tried that angle. I was afraid I'd go the whole summer without a decent dragonfly shot, but I'm pleased with this one. Glad you liked it too.
One of the best write-ups on the lens: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_100_2p8_is_usm_c16/
Just FABULOUS, Russ! I thought I was going to go all summer without getting a shot at a butterfly, then they all showed up in Oct. It's been weird weather this year. So glad you got this shot to share.
Lovely bokeh, too.
Lens? If I may ask?
