Hummingbird society seems to involve lots of belligerent posturing and bullying. Or, it may just be this species, which I believe is Rufous. The same scene plays out over and over again. An older or larger one already on the perch just tucks it's head in and glares daggers at the newcomer. And the newcomer can't commit to a landing until it knows if it's going to be attacked. So it just kind of hovers there, hopping on and off, until an unspoken truce seems to take hold. Then they can both feed in peace, or until more trouble roars in. They're like little sugar powered attack planes.

Russ, This is a well timed capture of the sugar lovers. I have seen their aggressive behavior here at the feeders as well. So many feeding ports, and yet one will want the entire feeder to itself.

great show ya got going on there! They stake out their honey hole early and are convinced they will starve to death if they share! They have been known to spear the opponent to death should they not back off! UGH! But aren't they cute???? thanks for sharing the drama!

We watch these guys all the time too. Amazing how much drama happens in their tiny world.
