We call this a pestle and mortar. I have a wooden one but it's not at all as good as one made from stone. Interesting to think of all the spices that will be ground up in these to make the wonderful food of your country, and a very insightful shot.

i have a wooden one too, it is useless!! these look much better! you definatly need one for all the spices used in yummy indian cooking, which is very popular in England, particularly on a Friday night after you have been down the pub and got drunk! hehehe.
A very nice picture. I have always wanted a pestle and mortar. We had wooden and proper ones in school ( many moons ago) and I was always stuck with the wooden ones, and I agree they are rubbish compared to the proper kind.
Here we get long sandwiches at the 'grinder shop'. lol Interesting group of these implements. I have never seen the larger ones, but have used the mortar and pestle ones a lot, especially when cooking. Agree with Jan about the yum. Indian food is my favorite cuisine.
Love these heavy-duty variety grinders. I have a very small stone set that I use and I like it very much. I do a lot of cooking of foods that require freshly ground spices, so I can appreciate all the good dishes these will help prepare.
