Mute swan, Cygnus olor, Mute swans are one of Britain's largest and heaviest birds. Life span 10-20 years. Statistics Length:140-160cm, Wingspan: 200-240cm, Weight: can be as heavy as 15kg. Physical Description, Mute swans are very large white birds, with a long, elegant neck. The bill is orange or pinkish in colour with black on the lower part and around the nostrils. Between the eyes and the bill is an area of featherless black skin that forms a hump over the bill - this is bigger in males. Young, known as cygnets, have grey feathers and a pale bill. They lack the hump on their bills.

I was told that a swan is able to break a person's arm by the force of spreading its wings. Seeing this impressive image Mark, wouldn't take any risk to find out whether this story is true or not.

Don't know about your swans but the ones Down Here can get pretty pushy and aggressive and they are large enough to be a bit of a handful at such times. Always beautiful looking birds all the same. The curving steps in the background really add something to this shot mate.

Years ago I used to worry about the disguarded lead weights that anglers discarded in ponds as Swans swallow stones to aid digestion. Fortunately they've been banned from sell for some time now. :o)
