what the h*** is that on it's back? lol! Is he carrying a pebble or is he really that big fat and ugly! - ooops! I should have said that quietly! lol! I am not scared of spiders Scorp - I just have no desire to get that close to them so although I think this is an excellent capture he will not be finding his way onto my desktop! no way! lol! ;)

Ok, I'm raising my nose out of my library long enough to say this appears to be a Shamrock Spider! It is found throughout US and into Canada. They produce a new web each night, replacing the old web which they EAT strand by strand....maybe instead of submitting photos I'll just assign myself to solve all the Photo ID mysteries! .

If it came by me it would be a Flat Spider!
errr...technically it's a great photo - that shadow makes it come to life.

I do believe that's an egg sac. It's about the right time of year for them, and the hatching can be most grossly fascinating to watch!

It is indeed a shamrock spider (Araneus trifolium) & yes, that really is his abdomen, not an egg sack. It's an orb weaver & we have them around my house. Last summer I had one under the ledge of my deck & I kept feeding it & it got BIG.
