This was taken in the Confederate Cemetery in Fredericksburg, VA. These soldiers died in one of the four major battles in this area (Battles of Fredericksburg, Spotyslvania Courthouse, Chancellorsville, and Wilderness). Most of the 3553 men buried here could not be identified other than by their uniforms. These particular graves represent part of a Maryland Battalion. Oddly, this is a peaceful place. I have come here for years, seeking respite from whatever my current worries were. I did check the list of recent ghost sightings in Fredericksburg (and there are many) but none here. This seems to be a place of peace at last. Thanks for taking a look.

What makes the image interesting is the huge tree that has grown among the gravestones, a perfect metaphor for the cycle of life.

The reason why the sunsets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

I love the vantage point of the huge tree. I've noticed that many Cemeteries seem to take on a personality of their own. I'm pleased to see them still standing even as old and weathered as they are.

You must have done a double-take when you first spotted this, Sharon. A very unique capture, illustrating how time and nature is so far out of the control of puny and transient mankind. I have to wonder, though, what the roots have done to the wooden coffins underground, if any part of them still exist. Photojournalism, for sure.

The Civil War was a dark period of our history and I hope we never forget the lessons that it taught us ..... Great image Sharon .. I love the Message the tree sends us ... "Life goes on after we are gone"

Amazing how the tree is growing around the tombstone. Thanks for sharing the info about the place, too.
