I was privileged to be in this spot in those very still, hold-your-breath minutes just before sunrise. I don't have words to describe my sense of well-being, the feeling of being witness to something very important. I hope you can see what I mean through this picture. The view is of the Potomac River, standing on the Virginia shore and looking across to Maryland. Thanks for taking a look.

Wow, I didn't realize that river was that wide. Yes, Sharon, the calm is palpable in this photo — in the placid water, the near-cloudless sky, the quietly perching birds, and in you, the photographer willing to rise at an ungodly (or maybe Godly only) hour to be right there, right then, to capture the essence of peace. I actually plan to be doing exactly the same thing in about 7 hours from now, and I'll keep your image in mind as inspiration.

The reason why the sunsets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
