Cholla is pronounced "CHOY-yuh", and while it is a rather pretty cactus, the lightest touch, or brushing against it will penetrate the heaviest clothes, and inflict considerable discomfort for about a week. This particular garden is in Joshua Tree, National Park, south eastern California.

I like that sky, the textures of the ground and the lay out of the cactus. Never made it this place when I lived out there.

Beautiful posting, Doug. I get the feeling that I'm looking through 3D glasses when I view some of your postings. I fell backwards off my chair when I saw that cactus in the foreground coming at me. While I avoided the barbs, I now have a nasty bump on my head. Does this count as a critique?

I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

There are so many chollas here. We used to call them jumping cactus. If one gets on you the best thing to have to get rid of it is a comb. nice shot.

Excellent photo! As mentioned above, you have indeed achieved an almost 3-D effect in this photo which is fascinating. I like the shadow on top of the hills center/left. They make the hills stand out boldly. I do hope the note about "considerable discomfort for about a week" is not born of experience, but it sure reads like it is. Ouch.

Great Job!! I couldn't stand these things when I was in Tuscon. They were all over the place. You couldn't count how many times I was stabbed by these things!! :)
